Qualcomm's new MSM6300 chipset allows GSM/CDMA roaming
Qualcomm has begun shipping a new mobile phone chipset that could change the future outlook of GSM. The new MSM6300 chipset supports CDMA2000 1x (basic level 3G that is backwards compatible with regular CDMA) and GSM/GPRS. This means not just triband GSM phones, it means we could have dual-mode triband GSM CDMA phones.
"The MSM6300 chipset and system software will permit geographic roaming across CDMA, GSM and GPRS networks," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "The integration of GSM and GPRS with CDMA2000 is a world's first that again proves QUALCOMM’s leadership in the industry."
Qualcomm maintains that the tight integration of both technologies into the same chipset means that vendors will be able to develop dual-mode CDMA/GSM devices that are no larger or power hungry than current GSM models. A solution based on this chipset could provide real world wide roaming, since CDMA is the dominant technology in the United States, Korea, and some other markets. It also potentially provides a different 3G upgrade path for current GSM networks.
Naturally, the MSM6300 chipset also supports Qualcomm's BREW standard, a competitor of sorts to Java for mobile platforms. I say "of sorts" because there is currently a Java engine for the BREW platform that will allow BREW phones to run the same Java apps that the current GSM phones can.
Samples of the chipset have been shipping since September. More information can be found on Qualcomm's CDMA site.
