A new Motorola Inc. R&D complex has risen in Wangjing, Beijing. Motorola, together with the District Government of Beijing and Zhongguancun Electronic Zone Construction Co. Ltd started construction of the 92,000sqm complex in March 2005. The complex consists of one 16-floor office tower, three low-rise R&D buildings (three storeys each) and one lab building and will accommodate more than 3,000 employees, including 2,000 R&D engineers.
In addition, a number of R&D institutes will move into the new complex. These include the Motorola Beijing Compliance Lab, an ISO 17025 certified facility that will serve as the company's premier compliance test lab; the Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) China Design Center; Customer Network Resolution Center (CNRC); Motorola Engineering Institute (MEI); and Antenna and EMI labs.
Says Greg Brown, president and COO of Motorola, "China has always been a very important part of our company's strategy and it continues to be. Today's event is another key milestone for Motorola."
The inauguration of the complex coincides with Motorola's 20 years in China. Over these past years, Motorola has built a powerful local R&D team that worked on several innovative products including a smartphone line and China's first SEI CMM/CMMI Level 5 certificate.
